Einstok Beer, featured craft brewery at the Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza in Mammoth Lakes, California

Einstök Ölgerð has the honor of being our first Featured Brewery of the Week. Each week you will have the opportunity to learn about one of the festival’s participating brewers so tune in and check out all the brewers and their fine beers and ciders you will soon be tasting at the 23rd Annual Mammoth Festival of Beers & Bluesapalooza!

Einstök Ölgerð, Iceland’s #1 craft brewery is located just 60 miles south of the Arctic Circle in the fishing port of Akureyri, Iceland. There, the water flows from rain and prehistoric glaciers down the Hlíðarfjall Mountain and through ancient lava fields, delivering the purest water on Earth, and the perfect foundation for brewing deliciously refreshing craft ales. Their most popular offering, Icelandic White Ale, a Belgian style witbier brewed with orange peel and coriander, recently won Double Gold at the prestigious New York International Beer Competition, an honor that can only be awarded by the judges’ unanimous vote.

In just 6 years, Einstök has conquered 16 U.S. territories and vanquished over 20 countries. Their journey has been epic, if not extraordinary, but we must not forget that it wasn’t until March 1, 1989 that prohibition was finally lifted in Iceland after 74 years! Not unlike the modern marijuana movement, doctors would prescribe alcohol as a way around prohibition before the ban was lifted. Now March 1 is recognized as “Beer Day” with many Icelanders celebrating with a “rúntur” or beer crawl lasting until the wee hours of the morning.

In many ways, Iceland is a remote country in the middle of nowhere. The Vikings at Einstök prefer to think of Iceland as being in the middle of everywhere—that reality allows them to seek ingredients from all over the world and to deliver award-winning flavor profiles, unrestrained by the local crop. Einstök represents the first real exposure many people have to Iceland and often becomes the inspiration for an adventure to the country itself.

So, Drink. Conquer. Repeat. And appreciate that you can have a cold beer in Iceland without a doctor’s prescription. Skál!
